Shinbudo
(Mixed Martial Arts System)

Provides Complete Training

As explained previously, Shinbudo is not a martial art style, it is a modern method of MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) cross-training, designed to test, identify, and integrate the most effective techniques, principles, and training systems available today! The Shinbudo class provides a friendly, safe and enjoyable format of comprehensive training for both men and women.

Martial Art Styles

A good way to understand the numerous martial art styles, is to look at them as specialties. The instructors of these styles are experts in a certain area. They generally focus on one or two areas, and less, or none at all, on all the other areas. Some of the many areas include fitness, health, philosophy, competition, and self-defense. These areas can be further broken down, for example, self-defense includes Standing Strikes, Standing Grappling, Ground Grappling, and Ground Striking.

Please note that the following video clips are highlights of our Competition Training and Advanced Training, and are not indicative of our normal - lower intensity - classroom training. Students are never required to free form grapple, spar, or fight until they feel ready to do so after adequate classroom technique training. There are numerous safeguards in place to maintain a healthy balance between realism and safety for all students at the Warrior's Cove, beginner to expert levels. Please read the Testimonials section of this website for more information on our safe and yet realistic training!

Cross-Training has been repeatedly proven as superior to single-style based systems in realistic fighting situations. It is important to note that FBI and law enforcement statistics, as well as thousands of mixed martial art competitions prove that nearly all real fights involve GRAPPLING and over 70% of real fights end up on the GROUND. Therefore, if you practice ONLY standing striking, like most schools do, you will not be prepared to deal with most REAL self-defense situations. We have seen hundreds of martial artists that have only a Karate, Tae Kwon Do, or other STANDING STRIKING ONLY system enter mixed martial art competitions and LOSE because they could not deal with the GRAPPLING or GROUND FIGHTING aspects of REAL fighting. The evidence is overwhelming! You must cross-train in ALL 4 AREAS if you are interested in training for realistic self-defense! Even martial art masters are not able to defend themselves in areas they have not trained.

1. Ground Grappling (Joint locks, Chokes, & Wrestling when fighting on the Ground) Some styles, such as wrestling and judo, do not train with any striking technique. Once again, this oversight leaves a weakness that can be exploited. Gracie (Brazilian) Jiu Jitsu is primarily a Ground Grappling system. However, many Brazilian Jiu Jitsu schools focus on realistic fighting and/or no holds barred fighting in addition to "sport" Jiu Jitsu. In fact, the founders of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, the Gracie Family, organized the first large Mixed Martial Arts competitions in North America called the Ultimate Fighting Championships! These Jiu Jitsu schools are cross-training schools that teach how to deal with all four self-defense situations! Due to the proven effectiveness of Gracie Jiu Jitsu, it is the only style taught in its entirety in the Shinbudo Cross-Training System!

Following is a short list of styles that train in Ground Grappling.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Schools Modern Reality Fighting Schools
Judo Some Japanese Jiu Jitsu
Sambo Wrestling

2. Ground Strikes (Kicks, Punches, Elbows, & Knees when fighting on the Ground) This is the most difficult type of training to find. In addition, this type of training can be very dangerous if practiced incorrectly. Some Brazilian Jiu Jitsu schools & Reality Based Training Schools offer comprehensive ground striking. Following is a short list of styles that train in Ground Strikes.

3. Standing Grappling (Grabbing, Throwing, Choking, & Joint Locks while Standing). Some Standing grappling styles do not provide ANY training in striking. This oversight will not prepare students for striking situations. Following is a short list of styles that train in Standing Grappling.

Aikido Japanese Jiu Jitsu
Sambo Some Kung Fu Styles

4. Standing Strikes (Kicks, Punches, Elbows, & Knees, while Standing). The vast majority of schools offer ONLY standing striking. Karate and Tae Kwon Do schools are prime examples! Therefore, Karate and Tae Kwon Do schools do not prepare you for ground fighting or standing grappling situations. Following is a short list of styles that train in Standing Strikes.

Student Testimonials
on Comprehensive Training

"I would recommend Warriors Cove to anyone who wants to learn a very effective system of self defense.  I have over 20 years of Martial Arts training and a black belt in Tae kwon do.  Out of all my years of training I attended many different schools and have had 19 instructors.  Based on my previous experiences I can honestly say that the Head Instructor of Warriors Cove, David Arnebeck, is not only one of the most skilled martial artists I have trained under, but he is also the best instructor I have ever had.  Mr. Arnebeck is very patient and takes the time to make sure his students understand every technique.  The training environment is safe, clean and there are no attitudes by other students.  My favorite aspect of the school is the training in Brazilian Jujitsu which is a very effective defense and a great workout.  The training is well rounded and includes stand up striking and throws.  I highly recommend this school to both the experienced martial artist and also those with no prior experience."

Sean P. Lissarrague - Shinbudo & Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Student. Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do with over 20 years experience.

"It is the best overall training I have come across. All aspects of realistic fighting are taken into consideration. Not many schools provide ground fighting, yet this is where most fights end up!"

Jason Bretto - Shinbudo & Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Student. Former training includes 5 years of Tae Kwon Do and 2 years of Boxing.

"Before I joined the Warrior's Cove I had the opportunity to visit many of the other schools in the area. As a former wrestler, I asked what they would do if someone got past their kicks and punches and grabbed them or wrestled them to the ground. They told me that I would not need to worry about that. Now I know how ridiculous that answer was. The Warriors Cove has an effective martial art curriculum with both striking and grappling. I have met new friends and achieved greater self-discipline. Don't take my word for it, find out for yourself how fun and rewarding this training is!"

Michael Moren - Shinbudo & Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Student. Former Wrestler and Gymnast with a Degree in Exercise & Corporate Fitness.

"It is one of the few places in the upper Midwest providing genuine Brazilian Jiu Jitsu which, combined with the striking techniques taught, is a very practical system of self-defense. The instructors are very approachable, and the members are enjoyable to train with. I live 50 miles from the school, and it's definitely worth the trip!"

Bill Moser - Shinbudo & Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Student. Former student of Arizona Judo Champion and UFC Competitor, Christopher Leininger.

"The best thing about the Cove, is the atmosphere. It's friendly and cooperative with fantastic instruction from some of the best martial artists in the area. When Mr. Arnebeck demonstrated Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, I was amazed! I outweighed him by 100 pounds, but he tossed me like a rag doll and submitted me with ease. That's when I realized cross-training is the way to go. You must be able to defend yourself both standing and on the ground. Otherwise, you will have a weakness that can be exploited."

Michael Ellefson - Shinbudo & Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Student. 3rd Degree Black Belt of Aikido & 2nd Degree Black Belt of Ryukyu Kempo.

"The training I have received at the Cove is top notch. Mr. Arnebeck always answers my question no matter what it is. I feel that the training pertains to real life situations that may occur, not just the competition end. I love that I get a well rounded training as well. One day working on my feet the next on the ground. As a wrestler for many years I have been taught many moves on the ground. Shinbudo teaches me a more effective and safer ways to defend myself on the ground. Training with Mr. Arnebeck and his assistant instructors is something that I look forward to every week."

Eric Herman - Shinbudo & Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Student. Previous training includes 11 years of Folk, Freestyle, and Grecco wrestling. Inside Sales/Fabrication for a steel company in Eagan.

"Warriors Cove offers great realistic martial art training to keep you safe on the street or at home. It gives well rounded instruction, allowing you to be a well rounded fighter and capable of defending yourself in any environment. However the best thing I like about Warriors Cove is the friendly training environment.  Everyone here is really supportive and answer any questions that you have."

Cutler Dozier - Shinbudo, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, & Eskrima Student.

"The Warrior's Cove offers many disciplines and cross-training principles. No matter what form of martial art you have studied in the past, you will learn a great deal more by incorporating these cross-training techniques."

Michelle Cruze - Shinbudo & Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Student. Former Chung Moo Do (Oom Yung Do) practitioner.
